Why Should You Go for a Matte Lip Look?
Matte lips are the anti-gloss and for years now have appeared on the fashion runways. This year is no different, with matte ruling the catwalk with its picture-perfect appeal. Super gloss might once have been the go-to look for us ‘80s and ‘90s babies, but it is the color-rich matte lipstick that brings in the maturity and has become mostly the only type of lip that we see these days. Why?

Plus, the sheer amount of color added to your face allows you to go easy on the rest of your makeup, still looking incredible with a dab of rose to the cheeks and hair pulled out of your face in a simple style.
Furthermore, the plush lips you get with matte lipsticks contrast beautifully with the highlighter you are bound to use on the rest of your face, allowing for sparkle to exist elsewhere, without overpowering your features. All very good reasons to go matte, but the best is having absolutely no bleeding out of the product. Go for the fresh and modern, people!
How to Make Matte Lipstick
While matte lipstick products do exist on the market in large numbers, there is no need to spend a whole boatload of money on revamping that makeup box of yours. Instead, you can use your favorite existing hues, simply made matte by your own efforts.
Literally any lipstick can be transformed into a modern sophisticated matte by using a myriad of products that are lying around your house. At the end of the day, you want to avoid lipsticks that are too chalky or cake up at the corners of the lips.
Things you can use to make any lipstick matte:
• Similar hued eyeshadow
• Tissue paper with translucent powder
• Mattifying products
• Oil blot papers
• Tissue paper with translucent powder
• Mattifying products
• Oil blot papers
How to Make Lipstick Matte with Eyeshadow
Matte eyeshadow in a similar hue as your lipstick works perfectly as a mattifying powder for your lips. Use a brush and gently dab it on you freshly applied lipstick, creating a lovely matte finish.
You can also use matte blush for pink lipsticks and matte bronzers for browns, each working perfectly to remove the extra shine, but keeping the moisturizing effects of the lip products originally used.
How to Make Lipstick Matte with Translucent Powder/ Baby Powder
The most common way to mattify your regular lipsticks is doing it with a translucent powder, like Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder, the Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder or the Tarte Smooth Operator™ Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder. If you don’t use any setting powder in your makeup routine, you can reach for baby powder instead.
The steps are as follows:
• After an even application of the lipstick you desire, take a tissue and blot the excess color. Sometimes this is enough to create enough of a matte look to go on with.

• If not, take another tissue, separate the plies, use one piece over your lips and apply translucent powder on now. The tissue prevents unevenness and ensures you are not getting more product on than necessary.
• If you aren’t satisfied with the result and want an even more intense matte look, as your second step you can directly apply the translucent powder over your lipstick using a makeup brush.
• Press your lips together for an even distribution, and voila! If you do not have translucent powder, you can try baby powder as well, using the exact same process.
How to Make Lipstick Matte with Mattifying Products
Mattifying lip serum works quickly and efficiently, though it is a new product on the market. Few places currently have good mattifying lip serums to make any lipstick matte, and they are generally used by pro makeup artists.
You simply need to finish off your lipstick with a quick brush of the serum or gel, and you have gorgeous matte lips to show the world. The Smashbox Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer is one amazing mattifying product for your regular lipsticks, however, it doesn’t work with lip-glosses, balms and lip lacquers.
You can also use a mattifying face primer (like the NYX Shine Killer) on your lips for the same effect, but only if the main ingredient is a silicone called dimethicone. It blurs out the shine and looks rather lovely, if done right.
You can use most of the products with glossy lipsticks as well, in any stage of luster. Using a lip brush to spread around the area needed is a great idea as well.
How to Make Lipstick Matte with Blotting Papers
Blotting papers are great for removing more than just the shine on your forehead and nose. They are made to absorb the excess oils and remove shine, meaning that any lipstick will be turning at least a semi-matte with this product immediately.
To make your lipstick matte with blotting papers, simply press one onto your lips after your regular lipstick application to absorb the extra shine and get that perfect matte lip.
How to Wear Matte Lipstick
A huge benefit to pulling off a matte lip, other than for the best selfie in town, is to have that incredible burst of color last you much longer than a regular liquid lip. It does not require multiple reapplications, holding on for hours on end.
A great matte lipstick will transform you. Whereas you looked great before, now you are stunning. But it requires a bit of work, even while taking much less time to pull off than a full makeup session. So how do you wear matte lipstick correctly?
1. Since you certainly do not want flaking lips to get in the way, create a soft canvas to work on by exfoliating that pout of yours. If you do not have exfoliating formula, you can opt for a toothbrush and Vaseline as well.

2. You will need to pick the right shade of lipstick for your skin tone. Fair skin tones look best with light pinks, beige, light peach and golden brown, with raspberry or orange reds giving an intense amount of drama; medium is amazing with apricot, bright reds, medium pinks, and orangey peaches; olives should stick to darker reds, darker roses, berry hues and dark apricot, as well as oxblood; and darker skinned individuals will be pulling off the fuchsia, golden beige, dark berry and brownish reds, as well as the browns in chocolate and peach.
3. Moisturize your lips before applying the lipstick in order to keep it nice and soft and looking beautifully plump. You can also simply apply argan, coconut, or sweet almond oil to your lips in preparation.
4. You will need a lipstick brush to finish off the edges once you have applied the lipstick, or you can use a lip pencil to line the X of the Cupid’s bow as well as the full pout, before coloring it in. The pencil should be the same color as the lipstick itself. Rubbing your lips together will not work with matte lipsticks, making that lip brush a necessity.
5. To finish off a sharp look to the lips, use a concealer to dap away at the edges with a Q-tip, cleaning up all the imperfections as it glides around. You can also apply some skin colored powder instead of the concealer.
Voila! You now look stunning with the shade of lipstick you love most, without the goo and the shine, and definitely no annoying hair strands sticking to you in the wind. Beautifully long-lasting is exactly how we love it.
Note: If you want to reapply your lipstick, you will want to remove everything. Touching up might not give the best effects all the time, so it might be better to try and create the right matte lips that last nice and long, the whole night through.
Makeup Tips for Matte Lipstick
The matte lipstick formulas today are a thousand times better than that seen from five years ago, of course, with hydrating oils added to the products, but there are still many beauty hacks you should know to pull off the best in matte lips that can happen.
• To make matte lips last for a longer period of time, even though they go for quite a few hours on their own, is to blot and apply over and over again before heading off. There is no way those lips are dulling out the color now.
• For a fuller lip, use a pencil liner to draw outside of your normal lip line. The matte coloring of the lipstick will not allow for the pencil to show up once applied, effectively giving you a larger and more seductive pout.
• Another trick to fuller lips comes from a quick dab of highlighting eyeshadow to the center of your lower lip before putting on the lipstick. It should be complementary to the shade itself, of course, and not clash in hues. Red lipsticks and nudes work best with a golden powder, while pinks and purples love the silver tones.
• To prevent a lipstick crease, opt for a non-greasy lip balm throughout the day, applied over the lipstick at will, keeping those matte lips of your nice and moisturized.
• To make the color pop nicely, use a concealer on your lips before putting on the lipstick, giving you a nice and neat look with bright pinks and nude matte lipsticks especially. Lip primers also have the same effect and prevent the color from bleeding out as you glide it on.
Matte Lipstick Shades
• You can opt for a sheer gloss over a matte lip for a bold look that is not as dramatic, giving a more laid-back vibe while removing any signs of lip imperfections as well. It looks fresh and dewy thus, but it might not be the look you are going for at the moment; this is optional.

• To remove matte lipstick that refuses to come out, use some Vaseline on a tissue to wipe it all off.
